Why does the AW3926QW picture look wrong out of the box?

The first hour with a new Alienware AW3926QW can be frustrating. One buyer on r/ultrawidemasterrace wrote that the screen “SUCKED” on day one. He then worked through the monitor menu, Windows and the NVIDIA driver, and ended up delighted.

Once this thing is properly dialed in, the picture quality and immersion are insane.

Four things make that first impression bad:

  • Colors look too strong. The default Standard preset pushes colors too far, so skin looks red.
  • Shadows look a little light. Tom’s Hardware measured gamma at 2.14 instead of 2.2, and Custom Color can’t fix it.
  • Too many HDR modes. There are seven to pick from, and the wrong one makes games look too dark or too bright.
  • Glare and the curve. The glossy screen reflects lamps, and the curved edges shift color at an angle.

Out of the box, the panel measures a grayscale error of just 0.70 dE, well into professional territory.

Flash firmware M2B102 before you change anything else

A firmware update can shift picture presets, so update first and tune second. TFTCentral tested M2B102 and found a change that Dell’s release notes skip. The update fixes the sRGB gamma curve in the Creator sRGB mode. That mode now tracks the sRGB curve from the factory calibration report, where it used to follow a plain 2.2 curve.

Everything else in that mode measured the same, including white point, color clamping and accuracy. The edge dimming after bright games also behaves exactly as before, and TFTCentral has reported it to Alienware.

One owner, u/DOHChead, reported washed-out colors and dropped connections after flashing, so recheck your preset and input settings once the update is done.

The best SDR settings for the AW3926QW

The most accurate SDR choice is Preset Modes, then Creator with the color space set to sRGB, which measures a 1.24 dE color average.

The sRGB mode locks most controls, however, and blocks white balance changes. If you’d rather keep the Standard preset and its sliders, turn on Windows Auto Color Management instead. It removes the oversaturation, with a 5.5 dE ColorChecker average.

Creator also offers DCI-P3, with gamma presets from 1.8 to 2.6. That option suits wide-gamut photo work and lets you correct the light gamma, which Custom Color cannot do.

A colorimeter won’t buy you much here, since calibrating the panel brings gains too small to see with the naked eye.

Dolby Vision is on by default, and it makes a useful pairing: leave it on and set Smart HDR to Peak 1300. The desktop then gets the True Black-like Dolby Vision look, which beats Peak 1300 for brightness in desktop apps. Windows switches HDR10 games and video into Peak 1300, with a brief black screen at each switch. Detection misses some content, though: HDR YouTube in Chrome stays in Dolby Vision, and so do some games.

Green edges and dim corners: what settings fix and what they cannot

The green shift appears mainly when you view the panel from above or below. Owner u/awowoosas saw the same tint only when looking from the side. It only shows clearly with your nose a few inches from the panel.

To fix it, raise or lower the stand until your eyes sit level with the screen’s center, and sit square to the curve. Head-on, uniformity measures a 3.71% deviation from center, with no visible change in any test pattern.

Judge the result from your chair. u/DOHChead pointed out that phone photos of a curved screen exaggerate edge problems. The same owner’s photos looked more even with Smart HDR off, but that setting also turns HDR off, and u/saint_marco saw no change. Treat it as a quick test at most.

Edge dimming after bright games

After about 30 seconds of bright-scene gaming, the edges dim slightly. Alt-tab to a white desktop and a faint vignette shows, which fades back to full brightness about 30 seconds later. It shows in SDR and HDR alike, though not during dark scenes.

The likely cause is CPC, or Convex Power Control. It’s an LG Display burn-in guard that dims all four edges of the panel, and this monitor has no toggle for it. Dell’s OLED protection features stay on at all times, so no menu setting reaches the CPC dimming. The fix has to come in firmware.

I don’t think this is a hardware limitation, but a configuration issue.

GPU and VRR settings that finish the job

A perfect OSD setup still looks wrong if the graphics card sends limited range or 8-bit color. In the NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, set these four options:

  • Output color format: RGB
  • Output dynamic range: Full
  • Color depth: 10 bpc
  • G-Sync or FreeSync: on

Every input runs 5120 x 2160 at 165Hz with 10-bit color. HDMI needs DSC compression to get there, while DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 can run without it.

Anti-Flicker ships off, and it’s best kept that way. It cuts VRR flicker in menus and loading screens, but it also made small frame rate swings feel less smooth. The 48Hz VRR floor stays the same either way.

Fix a bad picture on the AW3926QW in eight steps

Update to firmware M2B102

Download the updater from Dell’s AW3926QW drivers page , connect a USB-A to USB-B cable from PC to monitor, and run it. Confirm that Display Info in the OSD reports M2B102.

Pick the SDR preset

Set Preset Modes to Creator and choose sRGB for desktop, web and photo work. If you prefer the Standard preset, turn on Windows Auto Color Management instead.

Choose the HDR mode

Start with DisplayHDR True Black. Switch to HDR Peak 1300 for dark games and films, and try Peak 1300 Bright only if you accept lifted shadows. Leave Dolby Vision on if you want the monitor to switch modes by content.

Set the graphics card output

Choose RGB, full range and 10 bpc, and turn on G-Sync or FreeSync. On DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 you can turn DSC off in the OSD.

Leave Anti-Flicker off unless menus flicker

Turn it on only if flicker in loading screens bothers you more than slightly rougher frame rate swings.

Seat yourself and test head-on

Set the stand so your eyes are level with the screen’s center. Open a full-screen white and grey test from your normal seat, and judge the edges from there with your own eyes.

When is it the panel and not the settings?

Settings can’t fix a real defect. After the eight steps, add single-color tests to the head-on check, and judge only what shows at a normal viewing distance.

A few signs point to the panel and justify an exchange:

  • Edge tint that stays visible when you look straight on.
  • Uneven brightness on the SDR desktop with no bright game running beforehand.
  • Physical damage, like the cracked bezel u/aPHAT88 found.
